Dividend Yield Calculator

Free online dividend yield calculator to estimate dividend yield and dividend income from annual dividend per share and current stock price. This calculator is useful for dividend investors, stock analysts, finance students, retirees, portfolio builders, and anyone comparing income stocks. Dividend yield is one of the most widely used stock-income measures because it shows how much annual cash dividend a stock produces relative to its current market price. A higher yield can indicate stronger income potential, but it can also reflect slower growth or higher risk. A lower yield can still be attractive if the company has room for dividend growth or stronger earnings quality.

This calculator uses four main inputs. Annual dividend per share means the total dividend paid on one share over a full year. Current stock price means the latest market price of one share. Shares owned means how many shares you currently hold. Target annual dividend income means the yearly income goal you want from dividends. Once these values are entered, the calculator shows dividend yield, annual dividend income, investment needed for target income, and shares needed for target income. These outputs help connect stock yield with portfolio income planning and show how much capital may be needed to reach a chosen income target.

The formula of dividend yield

Dividend yield = Annual dividend per share / Current stock price x 100

Annual dividend income = Annual dividend per share x Shares owned

Investment needed for target income = Target annual dividend income / Dividend yield

Shares needed for target income = Target annual dividend income / Annual dividend per share

Here annual dividend per share means the total yearly dividend paid for one share, current stock price means the market price of one share, dividend yield means the annual cash dividend as a percentage of share price, annual dividend income means the total yearly income from the shares owned, investment needed for target income means the amount of capital required at the current yield to reach the chosen income goal, and shares needed for target income means the number of shares required to generate that yearly dividend amount.

Solved Example

Example 1: Find the dividend yield if annual dividend per share is $2.40, current stock price is $40.00, shares owned are 250, and target annual dividend income is $1,000.

Solve: Dividend yield = 2.40 / 40.00 x 100 = 6.00%

Annual dividend income = 2.40 x 250 = $600.00

Investment needed for target income = 1000 / 0.06 = $16,666.67

Shares needed for target income = 1000 / 2.40 = 416.6667

Example 2: Find the result if annual dividend per share is $3.20, current stock price is $64.00, shares owned are 300, and target income is $2,400.

Solve: Dividend yield = 3.20 / 64.00 x 100 = 5.00%

Annual dividend income = 3.20 x 300 = $960.00

Investment needed for target income = 2400 / 0.05 = $48,000.00

Shares needed for target income = 2400 / 3.20 = 750.0000

Example 3: Find the result if annual dividend per share is $1.80, current stock price is $30.00, shares owned are 500, and target income is $3,000.

Solve: Dividend yield = 1.80 / 30.00 x 100 = 6.00%

Annual dividend income = 1.80 x 500 = $900.00

Investment needed for target income = 3000 / 0.06 = $50,000.00

Shares needed for target income = 3000 / 1.80 = 1666.6667

Table of dividend yield calculator

Annual Dividend Stock Price Dividend Yield Income on 250 Shares
$1.20 $24.00 5.00% $300.00
$1.80 $30.00 6.00% $450.00
$2.40 $40.00 6.00% $600.00
$3.20 $64.00 5.00% $800.00

How to use this dividend yield calculator

Enter annual dividend per share in the proper input field. After that, enter the current stock price, the number of shares owned, and the target annual dividend income. Then click the calculate button. The calculator will show dividend yield, annual dividend income, investment needed for target income, and shares needed for target income in the result box.

This calculator is especially useful when comparing dividend-paying stocks that have different prices and dividend amounts. Two companies may pay different annual dividends, but the yield reveals which one produces more income relative to price. The target-income outputs also make this useful for retirement planning and passive-income estimation because they show both the capital required and the approximate number of shares needed to reach an income goal.

When using the result, remember that dividend yield changes whenever the stock price changes. A stock can show a higher yield simply because its price has fallen, and that does not always mean the dividend is safer or more attractive. It is also important to study payout ratio, earnings strength, cash flow, and dividend history alongside the yield. Even so, this calculator gives a fast and practical way to estimate stock income, compare dividend opportunities, and plan toward a target income level.
